Alberta Innovates Backs Our Hemp Biocomposites

After several years of work, we are proud to share that Alberta Innovates has awarded Upcyx a $100,000 voucher to launch a large-scale run of our hemp biocomposites.

The project takes plant material that usually ends up in landfills or is left in the field, such as hemp straw and cannabis stems and leaves, and turns it into materials developed with home compostability in mind. The first targets are everyday items that are plastic today, like pre-roll tubes and flower containers.

Built by an Alberta team

The run brings together fibre processors, research partners and manufacturers, including the Bio Processing Innovation Centre and NAIT (Northern Alberta Institute of Technology), along with filament and injection molding partners who will turn the material into real parts.

This is a major step toward the circular, local material economy we have been building for five years. Stay tuned for updates from the lab.
